How Freelancers Should Document Foreign Income
2026-03-19
Freelancers earning from overseas clients occupy a favourable position in Pakistan's tax system, but only if the income arrives and is documented through the formal banking channel.
The essential document is the Proceeds Realisation Certificate, or an equivalent bank credit advice, showing that the funds were received from abroad in foreign currency and converted in Pakistan. Without it, concessional treatment on export of services is difficult to defend.
Maintain a simple ledger of invoices raised, dates, client names, currency amounts and the rupee amount actually credited. Payment platform statements are useful supporting evidence but are not a substitute for bank records.
Open a dedicated bank account for freelance receipts. Mixing personal and business flows makes reconciliation painful and weakens your position if the FBR queries deposits in your wealth statement.
Register your freelance activity properly. Being on the Active Taxpayers List reduces withholding on your inward remittances and banking transactions, and it is a prerequisite for most concessional schemes.
Declare the income even where the effective tax rate is low or the receipts fall under a final tax regime. Undeclared foreign receipts sitting in a bank account are the fastest route to an unexplained income assessment.
Good documentation is also commercially useful. Clean, verifiable income records support loan applications, visa filings and any future decision to convert your freelance practice into a registered company.
